Thiruvaluvar, the poet and
philosopher of Tamilnadu - India is the Everest of Tamil wisdom. Thirukural, the
masterpiece of Thiruvaluvar, which is a mini-work in size, contains 133 chapters
on different aspects of life, and each chapter consists of ten couplets. So
Thirukural contains 1330 couplets. Each couplet is called Kural-Venba (KURAL),
which is one of the basic meters of Tamil prosody.
The real greatness of
Thirukural is its survival, even after the onslaughts of many heterogeneous
creeds. In the past two thousand years, it has never failed to attract scholars
and lovers of wisdom. Everyone of them, never hesitated to treat Thirukural as
